Bruin Football 2011

Year In Review

Our 2011 football season came to an end last Friday with a 28 - 21 defeat at the hands of the Preston Indians.  History has repeated itself as this was the same team we lost to last season to end our year.  Preston will go on to play the Pocatello Indians next Friday and we will check in our gear and have our football banquet on the 21st of November.  It is always hard to finish any season with a loss, but only 4% of the football teams in the state of Idaho will finish their year with a win and a state championship.

Friday night's game was even at the end of the first half with a score of 14 to 14.  Both teams had 2 offensive series each and each team scored on both of its possessions.  We came out the second half and took the lead at the end of the 3rd quarter to go up 21 to 14.  Sophomore running back Jacob Johnson scored his first varsity touchdown late in the third quarter to give the Bruins our only lead of the game.  Preston came back in the 4th quarter to score twice and we could not answer each time.  Our offense sputtered in the fourth quarter and we just could not put first downs together like we did in the first three quarters.  This inconsistency has haunted us all season and in order win the big game you have to go out and play consistent football week in and week out.  Our defense did not play downhill like it did the previous two weeks.  We did not feel like we played with the aggressive nature that we had acquired the previous weeks.  We also gave up a big play on special teams which we have not done all season.  Bottom line is we did not play well enough to win a playoff type football game.

In conclusion, we have felt all season that we would go as far as our senior class would take us.  We only had 16 seniors this season compared to 35 last year.  We only had 2 returning senior starters from last season.  We had 4 or 5 other senior players that contributed throughout the season, but for the most part we were a junior/sophomore laden football team.  Our seniors gave us the most they could throughout the season but it was not enough to get us very deep into the playoff picture.  We appreciate the seniors that gave the effort they did this year and we wish them the best of luck.  Our returning players have a very good opportunity to have a solid football season next year.  There is a great deal of work to do in the off season.  We promote that all of our football players get involved in other sports at Twin Falls High School.  We believe you become a better competitor when you are in a sport competing against an opponent in another colored uniform.  Our staff will work very hard in the off season starting in February to put together a plan to give our next year's team the best chance to compete for a football state championship.  We hope that you will continue to support our Bruin football program in the months and years to come.  Thank you for all of your support this season.

Once again thanks for all of your support and GO BRUINS!
